Description
The Uritonnoir: the eco-designed dry urinal for events and gardens
The Uritonnoir is an innovative dry urinal, combining a traditional urinal with a funnel. This eco-designed device collects urine (a source of nitrogen) and combines it with straw (a source of carbon) to produce human manure, known as fumain. Once composted, it becomes a natural fertiliser for plants and vegetable gardens, thereby reducing the use of chemical fertilisers.
A solution suitable for public and private spaces
Local authorities and event organisers use the Uritonnoir to improve the cleanliness of public spaces. It is ideal for:
- Micro-festivals and outdoor events to complement dry toilets.
- Nature camps and school trips to raise awareness among young people about the nitrogen cycle.
- Shared and private gardens, in order to recycle organic waste independently.
- Sports facilities or adventure parks, where sanitary facilities are limited.
Ecological and economic benefits
The Uritonnoir operates without connection to the sewerage system. This saves drinking water and reduces cleaning costs. By collecting urine to transform it into natural fertiliser, it promotes a circular economy and supports the QSE strategy of local authorities and associations.
A practical and durable item
Made from recyclable polypropylene, the Uritonnoir is UV and frost resistant. It is shipped flat and is easy to assemble. Lightweight and compact, it is easy to transport and can be quickly installed on small or large bales of straw.
Awareness raising and education
In addition to its practical function, the Uritonnoir serves as an educational tool. It shows in a fun way how to make the most of natural resources and turn everyday actions into benefits for the environment. Thanks to its simplicity and effectiveness, the Uritonnoir transforms a mundane gesture into a responsible practice that is both beneficial for the environment and for the management of public spaces.

Context

Individual installation at the back of the garden.
Three bales are enough to allow for the installation of the urinal funnel. à supprimer Straw bales in contact with the soil are removed to make compost. We raise the uritonnoir to the right height (70cm for adults) and add a bale of straw at the top.

Installation during private festive events
The uritonnoir can be installed during festive events with family or friends … To complete the toilets in the house, you can also install uritonnoirs in your garden. After the event, the straw bales can be left on site for composting.
Installation in camping and lodging
The uritonnoir can be installed when camping, outdoors or near a lodge. To complete the toilets too far from certain camps, the uritonnoir alternative is relevant. From 3 uritonnoirs, you can choose to install them on large straw bales (Roundballer or Bigballer) A farmer can provide you with these straw bales. At the end of the season, the straw bales can be left on site to be composted or collected by the farmer who will place them on his composting platform.
Installation for tree climbing sites, Via ferrata …
On acrobatic adventure sites, it is sometimes difficult to install collective toilets. The uritonnoir easily responds to this constraint since it does not require any connection to the sewerage network. It is easy to route a few straw bales to the identified location to set up this solution.
Public installation during festive events or sporting events
L’uritonnoir peut être installé lors d’événements festifs de plein air.
L’uritonnoir est une solution pertinente pour compléter les équipements sanitaires traditionnels. At the end of the festival, the straw bales can remain on site to be composted or be collected by the farmer who will move them to his composting platform.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Why a waterless urinal ?
We are facing two major environmental problems:
- excessive use of drinking water for toilet flushing
- The major difficulty lies in utilizing sewage sludge in agriculture, because the mixing of urine with other pollutants (solvents, heavy metals) makes it impossible.
A dry urinal is a device for collecting and utilizing urine, separate from conventional toilets and the sewer system. It relies on a carbon/nitrogen mixture (straw/urine), the temperature increase, and the bacteria and microfauna in the soil to transform our waste into compost—directly contributing to vegetable or horticultural production without fossil-based fertilizers. Urinating in straw is a healthy way to utilize urine on-site through composting, and to avoid losing the nitrogen—which is present in urine at 95%. It is also a way to reintroduce organic processes into cities, bringing urban areas closer to good agricultural practices.
Where can we install Uritonnoirs?
- Individual use — at the back of the garden, on 3 bales of straw
- Collective use — family gatherings, sporting events, festivals, campsites

Why a plastic Uritonnoir ?
Uritonnoirs are made of polypropylene—the same material as Ecocups®. This plastic is flexible enough to absorb shocks and prevent injuries if dropped. Durable and recyclable, it can be cleaned and reused just like an Ecocup®.
How do we define the number of Uritonnoirs and straw bales?

Why doesn’t a well managed uritonnoir smell?
The urine must remain in contact with the straw to limit ammonia production. To achieve this, the quantity of uritonnoirs and straw bales must be adjusted to the number of visitors — a maximum of 60 users per uritonnoir over 2 to 3 days is allowed.
- Maximize the number of Uritonnoirs on the bale to distribute the urine in the straw — 1 Uritonnoir per linear meter
- Place the uritonnoir in the shade to prevent urine from evaporating too quickly.

How many Uritonnoirs are needed for an event?
One uritonnoir is recommended for every 50 to 60 users over 2 to 3 days, in addition to existing toilets. For permanent use in a garden, one is sufficient for a household.
What is the lifespan of a Uritonnoir?
Made from UV and frost-resistant polypropylene, the Uritonnoir is designed to last for several years outdoors. It does not degrade in contact with urine and can be cleaned with water.
